Inspired by a love of caring for patients and families during their greatest time of need and motivated by a realization that Hospice care is misunderstood deeply in our country, I started The Helpful Hospice Nurse. I have found that families and patients often aren’t aware of the supportive service available to them, and make the incorrect assumption that Hospice is only for those who have “given up.” I have witnessed countless patients and families wait too long to receive services that could have changed the course of the remainder of their lives. I’ve watched as families made decisions based on fear and confusion rather than love and understanding. I’ve also seen those who have had the opportunity to die with dignity and families who have cherished the hours and days spent with a loved one during that time.
My hope is that patients, families, Hospice staff and Hospice staff hopefuls will find my site to be a much-needed source of information, comfort, and resources. I would love to see more patients take advantage of this wonderful benefit and to change the way our society views Hospice care.
